“Ears that hear and eyes that see-- the Lord has made them both.” Proverbs 20:12
When I was a high school senior there were a couple weeks when I had a double ear infection and I could barely hear anything out of either ear--which of course made my interactions with people interesting. I was taking classes at a local community college and in April I was headed on a trip to England with some of my classmates. In my Spanish class at the community college I had just finished the midterm so I went up to the teacher and told her that I would be gone for a week. I asked her what I should do for homework, which was a silly question since I couldn’t hear the response anyway. I just smiled and nodded my head and pretended like I understood. I figured I could just ask someone later. As I was leaving the classroom I heard her say something else. I had no idea what she had said so I just smiled, nodded my head yes, and closed the door behind me. As I was walking away I heard the class erupt in laughter.
“That’s odd”, I thought.
Later I asked a fellow classmate about it and he said that while I was walking out the door the teacher asked me to keep the door open and I proceeded to smile at her, nod my head yes, and shut the door behind me. The teacher said to my friend, “She doesn’t speak very good English, does she?”
If it wasn’t my ears failing me, then it was my eyes. The first day of 2nd semester my freshman year I was getting ready in the morning. It was pretty much like any other ordinary day...I showered, dressed, and dried my hair. When it came time to put on my makeup I was applying blush but somehow missed my cheek entirely and brushed my eyeball instead. I couldn’t open either one of my eyes and they were watering profusely. I was stumbling around the room and fell into something. So then I was in pain on the floor crawling around and still couldn’t open either one of my eyes. Apparently since I had scratched one of the eyeballs, the other thought it shouldn’t have to work either. I just had to wait it out. I missed my entire first class that day and later when the professor asked why I wasn’t there I had to tell him it was a ‘blush brush emergency’. I’m pretty sure he hadn’t heard that excuse before.
